I also offer other services that go hand in hand with restoration metal polishing such as:
- Paint stripping.
- De-anodising (the chemical stripping/dissolving of anodised coatings on aluminium items).
- Grit blasting & bead blasting.
- Repair work is also undertaken such as dent removal where possible.
- TIG welding repairs
- MMA (stick welding) - mostly used for cast iron repair welding with nickel electrodes.
- MIG welding (used only for steel repairs)
- Silver soldering – used for the repair of brass, copper, bronze and sometimes to repair thin stainless steel where welding is not appropriate.
Workshop Equipment
Blasting Cabinet
The blasting cabinet is 90cm wide, 65cm deep and 60cm high. It’s mostly used to clean the backs of items when mechanical or chemical methods will not do the job.
I try and keep at least a couple of different blasting media in the workshop. Aluminium oxide grit is used to blast the dirt off. If an item needs a shinier blasted finish glass beads are used afterwards to give a nice matt glossy appearance which will not pick up dirt on contact (ideal for the backs of engine cases, etc).
Example of a bead blasted finish
An example of a bead blasted finish (shown below) on the back of a cast aluminium RD 350 footrest hanger. It was blasted with aluminium oxide grit first and bead blasted afterwards to leave a semi shiny, clean surface finish.
3 phase compressor
A decent sized 3 phase compressor is used to supply the blasting cabinet as well as being used for all kinds of other air powered tools.
AC DC Tig invertor welding machines
The TIG welder is used to repair aluminium and stainless steel parts. Both are also capable MMA (stick) welding machines.
Polishing spindle
My polishing spindle, she’s always very dirty and she also likes to throw dirt at my face, up the walls and all over the floor! She eats 3 phase electricity during the day and sleeps at night. I’ve been with her since I was 18 having rescued her from the very first place I ever worked as a metal polisher (Corrotect Electroplating in Strood). Born in Birmingham by a company called Cannings, she’s a strong and dependable workhorse and will probably outlive me!
There are lots of other tools and equipment in my workshop which get used on a regular basis on customers' jobs.
